One nursing theory that impacted my personal values and goals is the environmental theory, created by Florence Nightingale. Nurses must apply this theory to their workday because the patients we encounter have unique needs that could vary daily. A nurse must create a healthy environment based on their patient's needs to help them regain their health. (Petiprin, 2016) We can improve a patient's environment with food, cleanliness, temperature, bedding, noise reduction, and advice. (Petiprin, 2016)
My professional practice focuses on the needs my patient can voice and those I might also observe. Often, the patient may not speak up when they feel uncomfortable or sad. I may notice they have removed their covers because they feel hot, or they may be shivering because they are cold. I would ensure the temperature is precisely what they need to feel comfortable enough to rest. If I noticed they were teary-eyed or quiet, I would spend a few extra minutes speaking with them to try ways to brighten their spirit or see what they need to feel comfortable again.
Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, advocated for sanitary environments to help improve healing and prevent infections. (Editors, 2017) Mary Eliza Mahoney was the first African American nurse to be allowed to practice in United States hospitals. (Editors, 2017) Both made a lasting mark on the nursing field in different countries and ways.
Mahoney paved the way for African American women to become nurses as she was the first ever licensed nurse of color. She overcame prejudices and her life circumstances to follow her career choice. (Spring, 2017) However, it has been noted she was successful in her career because she treated her patients like family. (Editors, 2017) Her determination to overcome her circumstances helped me push past my circumstances to achieve my goal. But more than that, her ability to treat patients like family and her push for excellence in the care she provided has influenced my practice.
Nightingale pushed for infection control measures and healthy diets, which she saw as essential to a patient's recovery. (Editors F. N., 2019) In my practice, I see the urgency for a healthy diet and sanitary measures to reduce the risk of infection. I do my utmost to help keep a clean environment and encourage a healthy diet for my patients.
The State Board of Nursing enforces state laws governing nursing to protect the publics health. (Kentucky, 2019) The American Nurses Association is an organization that offers resources to nurses across the country and provides a support system. (Editors N. W., 2019) The State Board influences my practice by equipping and enforcing the laws I must practice. The ANA influences my practice by offering webinars and forums that support and help educate me on the ever-changing rules and regulations.
