Get Herds of Top OSS Apps in One Free Download--Mac & Windows

If you want to put a boatload of useful open source applications on a computer or, as I do, on a pocket USB drive so that you can have them with you at all times, there are now some very fast ways to do this. MacLibre is a great way to get tons of good free, open source apps in one download for Mac users. For Windows users, as I've written about before PortableApps.com is also a great way to get many free applications in one free download. So what kinds of applications are we talking about?

Autoconf: The Unsung Hero of Source Code Compatibility

Have you ever wondered how the same program can work across so many different flavors of Unix?ᅠ One of the behind-the-scenes systems that makes this happen is GNU Autoconf, a program that makes it possible to write source code in a way that will work on many different computers.ᅠ Unix systems are largely, but not completely, source-code compatible, and Autoconf makes it possible for a programmer to identify these differences when the program is compiled, papering over them in the source code itself.ᅠ

GigaOm: Video Interview with Mozilla CEO John Lilly

Over on our sister site GigaOm.com, you can find an in-depth video interview with John Lilly, the newly appointed CEO of Mozilla. Mozilla, of course, has been much in the news lately. See our review of Release Candidate 1 for version 3 of the Firefox browser, which was just released, as well as Mozilla's confirmation of an upcoming mobile open source browser, dubbed Fennec. The GigaOm interview includes discussion of Mozilla's late entry into mobile platforms, June is confirmed as the final ship date for the official version 3 of Firefox, and Lilly even takes a swipe at the iPhone. There's much more. Check it out.

Unbound Wants to Challenge the DNS Monoculture

With gazillions of sites on the internet, one of the key pieces of infrastructure is the lowly DNS server. If you think about a world where you're required to locate servers by IP address instead of name, you'll quickly appreciate DNS.

In the world of DNS servers, BIND is dominant, running over 70 percent of all DNS servers according to a recent survey. Now a relatively new entry in the market, Unbound, wants to change that.

Android Developer Challenge: Early Apps Lookin' Sharp

Google has just wrapped up the Android Developer Challenge that it announced back in November. Android, of course, is Google's Linux-based mobile platform, slated to show up in a wave of new mobile phones later this year. The developer challenge put up $10 million in prize money, with prizes ranging from $25,000 to $275,000 for applications that panel judges deemed to be innovative. eWeek has a slideshow of ten of the award winners and here, below the fold, are some thoughts about what these applications say about Android and open source.

DimDim Enhances Open Source Version

We've mentioned DimDim - open source web conferencing software - here before, and our sister site Web Worker Daily has published a glowing review. Now, the latest DimDim open source release (beta version 3.5) is a big step forward for the open source community. Among the enhancements: There is no longer a limit on how many participants can be in a meeting. With this version, it feels like DimDim is taking open source much more seriously from a partnership perspective.

Worry About Integration, Not Installation

Thinking about using open-source software in your business? That's a great idea, and might well save you money. But don't assume that the only cost will be installing and configuring the program. No, the biggest cost will be integrating your new program into your organization. The integration may well require a consultant, or an in-house expert in these matters. But even so, using open-source software almost guarantees that the integration will be easier and cheaper than would be the case with proprietary software.

Firefox 3 RC 1: A Guided Tour

As we noted earlier today, after five beta versions have gone through testing, Mozilla has delivered Release Candidate 1 (RC1) of version 3 of the Firefox browser, for Windows, the Mac and Linux. I've been using all the previous beta versions, and while I'm still frustrated that I can't use my extensions with RC1, the rendering speed is so much faster than previous versions that I'm ready to use it as my main browser most of the time. It is still pre-release software, but the speed and several of the new features are truly welcome additions to almost everybody's favorite open source browser. Here's a tour of what's under the hood.

Firefox 3 RC1 is Here

The official first Release Candidate for Firefox 3--the next, much faster version of the open source browser that could--is now available. It hit that milestone last night. This release is all about stability and speed and bug fixes; there arenメt any huge new features to trumpet if youメve been watching the betas. But if you had trouble with beta 4 or beta 5 (which for Mike Gunderloy, who writes here, caused problems), the official Release Candidate is much better. Like Mike, I've been using Firefox 3 since early in its cycle. The improvements over the previous versions in rendering speeds are palpable, although this release still doesn't handle my extensions. Check out more on what Mike has to say at our sister blog WebWorkerDaily and stay tuned for updates this weekend as we take RC1 for a spin.
