Microsoft's Ozzie Feels Disrupted

Microsoft's chief software architect Ray Ozzie gave a talk this morning at the Sanford Bernstein Strategic Decisions conference, one of those gatherings for top-level executives. As part of the Q&A, he was asked about the perception that Google was a disruptive force that was hard for Microsoft to deal with. While admitting that Google was a tough competitor, Ozzie went on to focus on something he called even more potentially disruptive : open source.

Google Now Hosts Open Source Libraries

Are you using Ajax in your web application? If so, then you're probably using an open source JavaScript library, as well. Google announced earlier today that several popular JavaScript libraries, including Prototype and Dojo, will be freely available for web applications to incorporate in their HTML pages. By using Google's Ajax API, applications will be able to benefit from Google's fast content delivery network, as well as from the fact that browsers cache JavaScript files. So if any other application uses Google's copy of Prototype, your application will be able to used the cached version, saving time and bandwidth.


Interview: Hyperic on Scalability, and Monitoring Performance

Hyperic, an open source web infrastructure management software provider, has been in the news lately. The company?s flagship product, Hyperic HQ, was a finalist in the 23rd Annual CODiE Awards. Hyperic HQ specializes in monitoring applications for IT departments, and the company recently announced test results showing Hyperic HQ doing very large scale monitoring in conjunction with Sun's MySQL database. OStatic checked in with Stacey Schneider, Senior Director of Marketing for Hyperic, for thoughts on how open source software can play a part in highly scalable monitoring deployments.



LinuxWorld Expo to Offer Installfest for Needy Schools

As the LinuxWorld Expo conference, slated for August 4th to 7th in San Francisco, starts to take shape, more news is emerging about events to happen there. Oracle CIO Mark Sunday, IBM VP of Open Source and Standards Bob Sutor, and Kevin Clark, Director of IT Operations for LucasFilm are all slated to give keynote addresses. As of today, conference organizers have also announced a charitable Installfest event, where show attendees will be invited to customize donated hardware with open source software, to put computers in the hands of underprivileged children.



VIA's Open Source Notebook

If you've been scanning the news today, you might be under the impression that VIA Technologies had released an open-source notebook design. The OpenNote mini-note reference design has gotten a a sudden burst of press attention, but most of the stories don't seem to understand what's really open about this design. It's worth a look, as it shows the extent to which open is becoming a marketing term.


Facebook: Is it Going Open Source?

While nobody at Facebook is commenting on the rumor yet, TechCrunch is reporting that Facebook will turn the Facebook Platform into an open source project. TechCrunch's Michael Arrington reports that he has heard confirmation from multiple sources that the year-old platform will go open source, and that application developers will easily be able to migrate their Facebook applications to other social networks. If the rumor pans out, this could be good news for open source. UPDATE: Soon after this post went up, TechCrunch reported that Facebook confirmed this story as correct.
