You might recall that several weeks ago Jeremy White, president and CEO of CodeWeavers, promised to had out free licenses for the popular commercial version of Wine if at least one of a handful of (seemingly) unlikely economic goals CodeWeavers set were met before President George. W. Bush left the White House.

Reports are emerging of a serious security flaw with the Android software that powers T-Mobile's newly-launched G1 smartphone. Charles Miller, the researcher who discovered it, says he notified Google of the flaw this week but decided to also go public with the information to protect users from becoming exploited by people with nefarious intent.

KDE users have a new online spot to get together and talk about their favorite desktop environment. The KDE Forum re-launched this week and is already over 17,000 members strong. Since acquiring the Koders.com code search engine earlier this year, Black Duck Software has added more than 200 million lines of code to the Koders.com search repository. Black Duck says that an analysis of search requests reveals, Ruby is now the fourth most requested language on Koders.com, after Java, C/C++ and C#. That's interesting information, to be sure, but what does it mean?

Debian Lenny was originally scheduled for release in September. Now that we're well into October, Debian developer Alexander Reichle-Schmehl admits that plan was too optimistic. Although there are still over 200 release-critical bugs still waiting to be patched, if the Debian community is willing to step up, Lenny can see the light of day sooner rather than later.?

Open source mobile messaging vendor Funambol plans to add micro-banner ads to its online portal myFUNAMBOL. Calling the ads prominent yet non-intrusive, Funambol representatives say the new advertisements will display in several areas of the email client, including the inbox and message viewing screens. Company CEO Fabrizio Capobianco, says the move will unleash a major revenue opportunity for service providers, portals and mobile operators. What's in it for myFUNAMBOL customers? Plenty.
