Interview: Ken Drachnik on Sun's GlassFish OSS App Server

Last week, as part of a dual-promotion between OStatic and Sun Microsystems, OStatic introduced a program through which Java developers can get a year of free hosting for applications powered by the open source GlassFish Application Server and MySQL--both from Sun.? GlassFish is an app server project for the Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) platform, and is based on source code donated by Sun and Oracle. Its servlet container employs a derivative of Apache Tomcat. We checked in with Ken Drachnik, marketing manager for open source software infrastructure products at Sun and a co-founder of GlassFish, about GlassFish and open source issues.

Sun's Profits Dip 73 Percent, Pins Hopes on Open Source

Sun Microsystems, which is betting much of its future on open source, just reported its fourth-quarter numbers, and they were not rosy. The company's profit dipped 73 percent, year over year, for the fiscal quarter ended June 30th. Some observers are blaming the drop in profit on slumping revenues, but revenues were $3.78 billion, down only 1.4 percent from a year ago, and the company has continued with cost-cutting measures as the economy underperforms. The real reason for the slump in profits is that Sun has faced heavy competition from IBM and Hewlett-Packard in the high margin server market. Still, Sun maintains that its many open source initiatives will lead it toward brighter days.

Open Source Forecasts: Don't Discount Department Managers

There's a good recap on CNet today of findings from IDC's latest report on open source. Among other things IDC is reportedly forecasting that open source software revenues will reach $4.83 billion by 2012, growing at a 23 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Among several interesting aspects about the report, revenue from new OSS projects is expected to grow at 32 percent CAGR over the same time period. According to CNET's report, IDC director Matt Lawton also cautioned that standalone open source deployments are only one component of accurate forecasts. I very much agree with that last note of caution.

Big Buck Bunny: Check This Open Source Movie Out

If you pay any attention at all to the movie industry, you've no doubt noticed the tremendous success that Pixar has had with largely computer-generated animated films. They've got a pretty good track record, singer/songwriter Randy Newman quipped when he accepted a Best Song award at the Oscars for Monsters, Inc. If you take a look at Big Buck Bunny, though, a 3D animated movie created by open source contributors and just released for free online, it looks like Pixar may eventually have some competition. I say eventually because Big Buck Bunny isn't perfect, but it is surprisingly good.

JavaFX: A Bright Future on Open Source-Based Mobile Devices?

Sun Microsystems is out with an answer to Adobe's AIR and Microsoft's Silverlight Rich Internet Application tools: JavaFX. At the JavaOne show in San Francisco today, Sun's head of software, Rich Green, discussed what to expect from the new offering. Green claims JavaFX will arrive on 91 percent of desktops, 85 percent of cell phones, and 100 percent of Blu-ray players--no small claims. While I'm not positive it will have that bright a future on so many platforms, Green showed JavaFX running on Google's Android mobile platform, which is Linux-based. Here, there could be promise.
