Open Source Heads Off to School

Today brings a couple of new announcements on how open source software tools are pushing forward in the online education and educational collaboration markets. Fresh on the heels of news of its hookup with Dimdim, a maker of open source conferencing software, Zimbra has announced a new hosted set of services focused on schools. In other news, Wimba, which makes collaboration tools for education, is in a partnership involving the popular open source e-learning platform Moodle. Here are the details.


Dimdim/Zimbra Connection Shows Promise

Dimdim is an outstanding open source online conferencing application that we've written about before. It has a number of great features not found in other free online meeting applications, including the ability to record meetings so that the recordings can be shared with others. Earlier this week, Satish Dharmaraj, the co-founder and CEO of Yahoo's open source division Zimbra personally invested in Dimdim, and joined its advisory board.


Dimdim Delivers Version 4.0 if its Conferencing App

Dimdim, the open source web conferencing application that we've liked and written about is out in a new version 4.0. Dimdim is widely regarded for its ability to host online meetings including up to 20 people--for free. The new version adds many new features including letting you record your meetings and share playback URLs. If you have an existing Dimdim account, you'll be automatically upgraded. DimDim Gets $6 Million in Series B Funding

DimDim, which makes my favorite open source online meeting application, has announced that it has raised a global round of $6 million in Series B funding, led by existing investors Index Ventures, Nexus India Capital, and Draper Richards, from the US, Europe, and Asia. According to DimDim officials the new funding will enable the company to enhance its application and expand its reach.? DimDim plays in a crowded field, but I continue to like its prospects.

DimDim Enhances Open Source Version

We've mentioned DimDim - open source web conferencing software - here before, and our sister site Web Worker Daily has published a glowing review. Now, the latest DimDim open source release (beta version 3.5) is a big step forward for the open source community. Among the enhancements: There is no longer a limit on how many participants can be in a meeting. With this version, it feels like DimDim is taking open source much more seriously from a partnership perspective.

DimDim: A New Version of the Top-Notch Web Collaboration App

DimDim has long been recognized as one of the best open source online presentation and collaboration applications, and Bob Walsh, on our sister site WebWorkerDaily.com, has a scoop on the new version that will launch next week.

DimDim is a free web-hosted application that allows whiteboarding, PowerPoint or PDF presentations, and much more. Dimdim Challenges WebEx, Microsoft

Dimdim, a Burlington, MA.-based web meeting services startup, wants to take on Cisco Systems' (CSCO) WebEx and Microsoft's (MSFT) Placeware by emphasizing simplicity and ease of use. The company, which is backed by investors including Draper Richards, Index Ventures and Nexus Capital India, launches its service today at DEMOfall 2007.
